On the first part of the British Army’s recent operation and deployments, it was explained that the reason for this deployments and missions are for the improvement of peace and humanitarian issues and of course the protection of United Kingdom against world terrorism. The British Army is chiefly deployed in eighty countries all over the world. But the following countries are their major mission areas for several important local and international purposes. The first ones were Afghanistan, Africa and Brunei. Next come Canada, Cyprus, Germany, Gibraltar and the South Atlantic Islands.
Canada
Canada is composed of vast plains that have been a great training ground for the British Military. Alberta’s prairie is the British Army Training Unit Suffield (BATUS) official training location because of its massively wide area with sparse population. The British Army has equipped over 1000 vehicles mainly Challenger 2 tanks and Warrior Infantry Fighting Vehicles. Troops are sent here usually for six months in a year to complete a certain phase of military training. This location in Canada provides all the area for Infantry, Armour, Artillery, Engineers, Air Defence, Logistics and Equipment Support to conduct realistic live firing training at all levels and to practice sustaining this activity over a long period of time.
Cyprus
Cyprus was once colonised by the British Empire and only gained its independence in the 60s. However, two sovereign base areas were left in the hands of the British Territory according to the signed independence treaties. These territories are Akrotiri and Dhekelia- the only ones left under the British jurisdiction. The British Army’s role in Cyprus is to protect its territories and its associated retained sites.
Germany
The main reason why the British Army resides in Germany is because of the national and NATO security with the agreement and support of the German government. Together with the US Army, they provide intense security for the NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) allies. Aside from the prioritisation of security, other reasons for the British Army’s deployment in Germany are for economic and cultural benefits.
Gibraltar
Gibraltar is yet another British Territory and this time it is located in Spain. Basically, the British government owns two square miles and a population of 30,000 in this location where they conduct various military trainings and operations. Gibraltar’s location also serves as an outpost for observing shipping channels through the Straits that could dominate the western entrance to the Mediterranean in time of war. Other than this, the territory’s communication systems, runway facilities and harbour make it an important base for NATO.
South Atlantic Islands
British Armed Forces protect the Falkland Islands to deter military aggression against The South Atlantic Overseas Territories (SAOT). There have been a series of conflict in the territory for quite a while and when it was resolved, the Army, Royal Air Force and Royal Navy were working together and have basecamps in the territory.
